Matador and Bull - From personal photo - September 12, 2002

I had a very inexpensive camera (it probably cost under $10) when I took the photograph this is based on. That old photo is very dark now. I would rather look at a bullfight through a camera lens, somewhat removed from the action that way, than see it clearly. Besides, a camera quite literally gives me something to "focus" on when there are interesting things to be seen everywhere and it's hard to concentrate on one thing - even such a horrific thing as this where you know the bull is going to die a horrible death, and soon, right out there in front of you. I went to several bullfights - probably a couple of dozen at least - because it wasn't that hard for me to get there and it was the most fascinating thing that could be done with almost zero money (in those days, anyway). I understood that this was something that was not considered murderous or insensitive or anything at all bad by the Mexicans (the tourists had their own reasons, no doubt, for witnessing these bullfights, as I did), but in fact, as with the sport of hunting, it is considered a very fine thing to do, to kill an innocent animal, in a certain way, and if I'm not remembering incorrectly it seems to me that the meat of the bull is donated to charities...I may have imagined that. By drawing this it makes me feel as though I've done something for the bull, and for all the bulls that must die this way. It's not the best drawing I've done, and in fact it was one of the first I did with Conte crayons, and certainly the first I ever did with a bull in it (the last, too, I think), and that bull deserves to have a better drawing dedicated to it. I'll have to see if that photograph is too dark to draw from now.
