Vito Genovese (Nov. 27, 1897 - Feb. 14, 1969), Gangster and murderer (I don't know if there was a gangster who was not a murderer, but just in case there is or was one, I mention that he was "also" a murderer). Photographs taken of Vito Genovese when he was younger give the impression that he was quite homely, but in the photos I drew from which were taken when he was an old man, he looks much better for time having passed and taken him into the realm of "poor, pitiful, little old personhood." It makes me think about how we think of very old people as being innocent - Why? I think that way, too, and have to remind myself that just because someone is old doesn't mean they're innocent (nor does it mean they're wise, of course). Murderers, thieves, and other despicable people probably have as much chance of getting to an advanced age as most of those who have not commited heinous crimes, and some people have done horrible things that no one ever found out about. Besides, how many old people have led entirely saintly lives? And how many who have led saintly lives would rather not have? Vito Genovese died of a heart attack in the Springfield prison hospital. I had done the first stage of this picture on November 18, 2006, and now I've done the second stage on May 22, 2008. |
