I drew this same scene in pencil several years ago and now I'm going to try it again, possibly in ink this time. This is a very rough (as you can see) sketch on scratch paper (it's thin and has printing on the other side that shows through). I like the way it looks, though, in spite of the very rough face of the younger woman and the arms of both women -- the worst parts of this. I drew it with a 6B pencil. It got kind of dull by the time I got to the younger woman's face and neck, as you can see, but I didn't expect to ever make anything "finished" out of this. However, I do hope to be able to start on a good version on drawing paper, perhaps tomorrow (unless I spend a lot more time trying to get this right first). These are members of my family, back in the 20's. I'm closely related to them (they have all died) -- They were simple folks, but they had fun -- Don't judge them by their apparent scowls; they all had a wonderful sense of humor...well, at least those who are adults here did. They were probably just tired after hours at the beach, and the sun was probably glaring. Two of them are smoking cigarettes. |
